Friends of Paediatric Intensive Care Unit
Friends of PICU is a registered charity who supports children and their families on the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit Southampton Children’s Hospital at the University Hospital Southampton.
Southampton PICU is the regional lead centre for critically ill children aged from newborn to 18 years. The children are admitted from 27 referring hospitals across the South of England and the Channel Islands, and from the various children’s wards at Southampton Hospital. Over 1,000 children are admitted each year for specialist care by the skilled and dedicated team.

How Friends of PICU helps
The PICU provides families close proximity accommodation and a calming space within the hospital to be near to their child. However, the family accommodation area is in desperate need of improvement and is the charity’s current major project, separate to other requests from the hospital. LEARN MORE
In March 2017 Friends of PICU funded and opened the 2 bed space extension to the PICU, at a cost of approximately £500,000, following amazing support and donations to achieve this substantial project. LEARN MORE
Southampton PICU retrieval ambulances have been funded by Friends of PICU since 2012 . The ambulance enables the medical team to go and collect the sickest of children from across our region, bringing them to PICU for the specialist care they need. LEARN MORE
Friends of PICU provide funds to purchase equipment required by the PICU to maintain the gold standards of care needed on an Intensive Care Unit. Your fundraising has made a vital difference to the PICU year on year. LEARN MORE

Through your help, Friends of PICU provide additional support to create a caring and considerate environment in and around the PICU, which is hoped eases the difficulties, provides comfort, and supports families through their time on the PICU and also beyond. LEARN MORE
Soft toy PICU Elephant
Each child admitted to PICU receives a very special soft elephant, given by the nursing team on behalf of all who support Friends of PICU to help provide comfort and support. Ellie the Elephant also serves as the charity’s mascot, you can notice in the logo of the Friends of PICU.
